How Covid-19 is changing the building process

Sarah Aubrey, 26/01/2022

Like so many other industries in New Zealand, the global pandemic has led to some significant changes in the building industry. When building a new home, the team at Trenz Homes can help you plan around the disruptions caused by Covid-19 – here are the key changes you should be aware of.

  • Video communication like Zoom
  • When building a home, you can expect to have video conference meetings with your builder, architects, engineers, and other key members of the construction team – especially if lockdowns occur during the design or build phases.
As we’ve all become more comfortable with video calls, we’ve found these can be more convenient than having to travel to meetings. So when site meetings aren’t required, video calls have become a popular alternative. Your Trenz team will make sure you’re comfortable with the outcomes and decisions made in any meeting, regardless of whether it’s held in-person or over video.

  • Supply issues
  • There are worldwide issues impacting the supply and distribution of retail, food, and trade items. The delays in global shipping mean many building products are unavailable or are only available in limited supply – and a limited supply can mean both delays to your timing and implications to your budget. Your Trenz team will provide valuable insight as you build your own house, letting you know which products can be sourced more easily locally versus those which may cause disruption to your project.
Whether you choose an existing house plan or opt for a custom build, Trenz’s utecture software allows you to easily see the cost implications of your product choices, and change your selections to take advantage of local supply opportunities.

  • On-site Health and Safety
  • The use of masks and hand sanitiser is standard on any building site now, along with social distancing during periods of lockdown. You’ll be expected to protect your own safety as well as that of others on your building site by helping to prevent the possible spread of Covid-19. Your site will have its own QR code for the NZ COVID Tracer app too.

  • Remote home design with utecture
  • As we can’t always meet in person, it can be harder to stay involved in the design process of your ideal home. However with utecture, our online design software, you can still design and collaborate on your ideal home. The unique software allows you to visualise, personalise and price (in real-time), your dream home with unprecedented convenience.
