But fear not. It’s totally possible to get the best of both worlds when it comes to small homes. In fact, the key to making the most of your smaller spaces can actually be summed in a single principle: finding that sweet spot between form and function.
When it comes to these smaller spaces, you can’t really afford to be too lax with how you use space. Everything has to be deliberate, lest you end up cluttering what little space you have.
Practical Fashion
(In our humble opinion) filling your home with gorgeous furniture is one of the greatest joys in life. So don’t deny yourself the pleasure! Just make sure every piece of your furniture is as useful as it is pretty. If it’s not adding a function to the area, it’s likely going to just take up space unnecessarily.

In fact, why stop with only one use? Multi-functional furniture is your very best friend here. You might not have the space for a work desk and a dining table – so find something that can be used as both. A guest room is a privilege even those with moderately sized homes often don’t get to experience – so use a couch that folds out into a spare bed. You get the idea.
Furthermore, make sure your furniture can also be used as storage. A storage chest can double nicely as a table, use desks with drawers – that sort of thing. Clutter is one of the easiest ways to make small spaces feel claustrophobic, so avoid it at all costs.
Reach for the Sky
Lastly, if there’s no room to spread out, you can always spread upwards. Vertical storage/furniture – such as bookcases – make perfect, space-efficient features that add character to any space, without eating too much of it up.
